History

Croydon Tennis Centre is a family business, owned and operated by the Skippen family for 52 years.

Croydon Tennis Centre – formerly known, by the veterans in tennis, as “Brighton Street Courts” is steeped in history; dating back to 1906 when two tennis courts were established and surrounded by rose gardens and horse stables. The courts have been providing a community service for over 100 years, fifty years of which by the Skippen family.

The courts were purchased by Madge & Bert Skippen in 1958 where they ran the four courts providing a much enjoyed community service and social environment to the community. Saturday afternoon’s were consumed by Saturday Afternoon competition and Sunday’s would see Burt running a social round robin from 1pm, with Madge cooking and providing lunch to all that attended.

In 1984 when the centre was totally rebuilt by John Skippen, Brighton Street Courts became known as Croydon Tennis Centre.

2010 has been a significant year for Croydon Tennis Centre with our alignment with Tennis Australia as an affiliated member in January, and our recent achievement of “Finalist” in the 2010 Business Achiever Awards.

Today, we continue to offer a comprehensive range of services as outlined throughout our website.
